Mnemba, Jozani Forest and a spice tour are three of Zanzibar’s best-known experiences. They work well together because each shows a different side of the island: the ocean, endemic wildlife and the agricultural history behind the Spice Island name.

Mnemba and the northeast coast

Most Mnemba excursions depart from the northeast. The island itself is private, so trips focus on the surrounding reef rather than landing on the beach. Ask about sea conditions, group size, life jackets and whether the operator follows responsible dolphin-viewing practices.

Choose the earliest sensible departure for calmer water, but do not treat wildlife sightings as guaranteed. A good trip is measured by safe snorkeling and respectful behavior, not by chasing animals.

Jozani Forest

Jozani is the main place to see the Zanzibar red colobus, a primate found only in the archipelago. Visit with a guide, stay on paths and never feed or crowd the monkeys. The mangrove boardwalk adds another habitat and makes the stop more than a single-species visit.

Spice tour

A small working farm is more engaging than a rushed demonstration. You may see cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, pepper and tropical fruit growing in ways that are very different from the jars at home. Ask questions, taste what is offered and buy only what you genuinely want.

Fit them into your stay

Use Mnemba as a separate half-day from Matemwe or the northeast. Combine Jozani with a transfer between Stone Town and the east coast, and place the spice tour near Stone Town or on another transfer day. This keeps your beach days intact and reduces repeated driving.
