What to see and do in Zanzibar in 7 and 10 days after a safari

A simple route for beaches, Stone Town and island experiences.

A good Zanzibar stay combines three different moods: the layered history of Stone Town, the open beaches of the coast and one or two island experiences. The route below keeps transfers sensible and avoids turning a beach holiday into another fast-paced tour.

Start in Stone Town

Stay two nights so you can explore without racing the heat. Walk early through the market and carved-door lanes, pause for coffee, and return to the waterfront around sunset. A local guide adds context to the architecture, trade history and everyday life that is easy to miss on your own.

Choose the coast that fits you

Nungwi and Kendwa are practical for swimming and sunsets. Matemwe is calmer and well placed for trips toward Mnemba. Paje and Jambiani suit travelers who enjoy wide tidal flats, kite-surfing energy and a village feel. Base yourself in one area for a seven-day trip; use two areas only when you have ten days or more.

Add experiences carefully

Choose a spice tour, Jozani Forest, a dhow cruise or a responsible snorkel trip rather than trying to fit everything in. Group activities by location and ask operators about group size, safety equipment and wildlife etiquette.

Seven versus ten days

For seven days, use two nights in Stone Town and five at one beach. For ten days, use two nights in town, four on the east coast and four in the north. The longer plan gives you weather flexibility and a true rest day between outings.
